A squall is defined as a sudden, violent, gust of wind, often accompanied by rain, snow or sleet. While that may appear to have nothing to do with a summer charity cycling event, Team Squall disagrees.
Four grown siblings – Ky, Pack, Liz and Willie supported a friend of theirs who has ridden in 24 Foundation Charlotte for many years. In 2015, they came together in Indianapolis to ride in the event for the first time, and Team Squall was born.
“Our team captain,Pack, is an avid bike rider and saw this as a way for us to do something together to make a difference in raising awareness and fighting cancer,” said Ky.
The four grew up spending their summers on a family sailboat named Squall. They explained that they chose the name because of their fond memories of childhood summers, but also because cancer has a way of blowing in unannounced and disrupting everything, similarly to a squall.
Though the siblings live in four different states, they each make a different contribution to unite the team and make the ride great. Pack, who lives in Michigan with his wife, trains rigorously for the event and has a goal of 300 miles for the 2016 ride. Ky lives in Cleveland and is a cancer survivor herself. She is looking forward to the survivor lap and having one more year of cancer-free living under her belt. Liz, who lives in Milwaukee, organizes road signs and cheering. Last but not least, Willie, the sibling who lives in the Indianapolis area, will be Pack’s biggest supporter on his 300-mile ride.
The family is excited to come together and join the fight against cancer for the second time. Cancer is no stranger to their family. They lost both of their parents to cancer, plus many other family members and friends.
“Being a part of something like 24 Foundation Indianapolis gives us a chance to share our story and make a difference,” said Ky. “We have met so many incredible people along the way, and each one has a story of how cancer has touched their lives.”
Like a sudden gust of wind, Team Squall is a force to be reckoned with as we join forces with 24 Foundation to kick cancer’s booty!
