Richard Mar, 41, was the kind of participant we love to see at 24 Foundation. Enthusiastic, engaged, dedicated, and excited to change the course of cancer on the 24 Hours of Booty Loop in Charlotte. He’d set a big goal for himself: 150 miles cycled in the event’s 24 hours. In 2017, Richard had totaled around 100 miles, and he was excited to beat that number.
Richard had rallied coworkers to participate with him on Team Dimensional. In fact, Richard had shared his excitement and designed the team jerseys.
On Father’s Day 2018, Richard, an active athlete, went for an early morning jog ahead of his planned day of fun with his family, wife Nancy, son Calvin (11), and daughter Ashley (7). As he was returning from his run, Richard suffered sudden cardiac arrest and was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center, where he survived for nearly three weeks before passing away on July 7th, 2018, just weeks before 24 Hours of Booty 2018.
In honor of Richard’s life, legacy and passion for 24 Foundation’s signature event, Calvin and Ashley suited up in their dad’s bib, with help from Richard’s Dimensional teammates. They rode on tandem bikes with members of Team Dimensional, cycled in their dad’s honor, and did so with courage beyond their young years, fully living out their family’s hashtag #liveloverich.
24 Foundation events are steeped in poignant stories of loss, victory, survival, and legacy. While Richard wasn’t claimed by cancer, he will always be honored and memorialized by our staff.
